I met Manasa Grandhi at Gregory’s Coffee on 46th street near Grand Central Station. I was already pretty caffeinated so I opted for the Hibiscus and Strawberry tea.

Manasa is the Director of Operations at Mosaic, a digital modeling platform for private equity. Previously, she co-founded Clockout and before that worked in private equity at CVC Capital Partners and investment banking at JPMorgan.

Manasa joined Mosaic as the eighth employee in March. The firm was founded by Ian Gutwinski, who worked in private equity at Onex Partners and investment banking at CIBC World Markets.

Manasa gave me a demo that illustrated a simple interface and an even simpler but powerful idea.

Junior associates at PE firms spend enormous amounts of time entering data into Excel sheets so they can build models to analyze deals. Those models are not just time-consuming, but error-prone and not standardized.

Mosaic solves for that with a digital platform that allows anyone to enter in deal terms to generate well-formatted model outputs with precision. The information can be exported into Excel, as a PDF or a PowerPoint that can be customized with your firm’s logo.

Moreover, it takes advantage of the cloud in the same way as Google Sheets: multiple people can view and work on the same model, something that isn’t possible with Excel.

It solves an obvious problem for a large market.

Mosaic has AI features, but the main value comes from straightforward blocking and tackling that solves a persistent, decades-long problem for larger financial firms.
