I’m in Bergen, Norway so I stopped in to visit Aleksander Meidell-Hagewick for lunch at his cabin just outside Bergen. He prepared tomato, avocado and mozzarella sandwiches drizzled with olive oil. Det var deilig!
Aleksander has a background in AI, real estate and financial markets. He’s currently the managing partner of the Milieu Group and is working on launching a new active investment firm focused on venture capital and private equity in software, health and real estate.
It was a privilege to sit unplugged for three hours in deck chairs with a clear view of Grimstadfjorden – one of the fjords that connects Bergen to the North Sea. We talked about the direction of technology, finance and the future of the workplace.
The real world interrupted us in the form of overhead flights of helicopters ferrying oil workers to offshore platforms and a military submarine that glided by. They were reminders of how oil has transformed the economy and the country’s strategic importance.
Aleksander has been working on a proprietary deep neural network to filter for patterns to identify investment opportunities. He’s currently planning to leverage the technology to select managers for a fund of funds.
As part of the effort he’s finishing up some deep research on venture capital and also wrestling with basic logistical decisions, such as where he should be based and the tradeoffs of having employees work remote versus an office.
He plans to take off a couple of months to study music in Florence and clear his head before he kicks off his new investment company.
If you are looking for a new perspective on the future of markets or life you should connect with Aleksander via LinkedIn or DM me for a warm intro.
