The View from the Office.

The book maketh the person.

Craig Pearce, an editor at publisher Harriman House, didn’t say that literally, but it captures a reality that more and more people regard writing a book as a business milestone.

We got together for an omelet-and-roasted-potato breakfast at Lever House on the last day of Craig’s annual trip over from London to meet with potential authors.

Harriman specializes in financial books by authors including Ben Carlson, Jenny Harrington, Eric Balchunas, David Gardner, Natalie Brunell and Jack Schwager.

Craig signed finance blogger Morgan Housel, who became a phenom with The Psychology of Money in 2020. The book is on track to surpass 8 million copies sold this year.

Craig also published Josh Brown’s latest book “You Weren’t Supposed To See That: Secrets Every Investor Should Know” as well as books by Anthony Pompliano, Christine Benz and Nick Maggiulli.

Nick’s book – “Just Keep Buying: Proven Ways to Save Money and Build Your Wealth” – proved a breakaway hit. It sold hundreds of thousands of books globally, including tens of thousands in Japan.

Nick’s success is a reminder of the importance of the international market. Craig suggests would-be authors have that mind when they start any project.

His other advice:

-Start with the title

-Deliver a positive message

-Be ready to promote it

-Build an online presence

-Align your identify and career with the topic

Publishing isn’t an easy business, Craig said. There is no way to guarantee success.

But there is also also so much opportunity.

If you feel like you have a book in you, reach out to Craig or DM me for a warm intro.
