The View from the Office.
I met up with Cecilie Larcher, a recent graduate of the University of Chicago who is interning at ABC News, at the Bryant Park Cafe.
Cecilie is looking to build a career in journalism. She landed an internship at ABC and has discovered an interest in global economics.
We talked about looking for a position in a tough job market. There were just 1,000 new jobs added in the first half of 2025 in New York City.
Cecilie brings a unique background to the job hunt. She grew up in Austin, Capetown and Dubai and speaks intermediate Arabic.
She said she’s made an effort to reach out to people to network. We talked about “building muscles” by doing practice writing exercises. She’s also discovered the free Bloomberg Terminal in the Public Library as a resource.
We talked about how journalism has changed since I got into the business 35 years ago. A key difference is that you couldn’t be a journalist unless you worked for an established media company. These days you can write a blog or post online and get experience that you can use to get additional opportunities.
Cecilie started running during COVID and since she moved to New York has come up with a way to motivate herself for long runs: she picks a distant bakery in a different neighborhood and runs to it to get a pastry. She tracks her runs on Strava.
I said that running through all the neighborhoods in New York City will amount to its own kind of education in economics. And probably something she could write about.
You can reach Cecilie on LinkedIn or DM me for a warm intro.
