There are three big takeaways I have from a quick comparison of the volume of news coverage about coronavirus in the most affected countries.
1) How the amount of stories about covid-19 in the U.S. dwarf the volume written about any other country. There are some good reasons for this, of course. Still, the steep curve and the magnitude is notable.
2) How the coverage of China exploded and then just as quickly steadily receded as the official death toll waned.
3) How similar the nominal volumes and trajectories are for coverage in Europe, with the caveat that the U.K. saw some huge volatility along the way.
A note on the data: story counts are tallied from 175,000 news sources aggregated on Bloomberg.
