Some small product innovations portend big things.

I noticed one this weekend while searching Google for the NFL playoffs.

The search delivered a formatted schedule showing the times each team was playing. These handy formatted pages have been proliferating.

What caught my eye though was a feature Google unveiled last year that lets you “Pin Live Score.” Clicking it creates a tiny widget with the up-to-date score.

Observations from a product perspective:

–Noteworthy that Google is prioritizing a better experience over generating more search clicks.

–The feature lets Google persist on your home screen even after you have clicked way from search.

–When you mouse over the widget, it offers more information about the game and stats you can click into, which invites you to search for more information.

–It’s a model that could be used with many other searches and products for all kinds of data you want to monitor.
