The news coverage of the coronavirus peaked in the third week of March and has since declined steadily almost everywhere in the world.

In the past five weeks however there has been a divergence in the volume of daily news coverage about the virus in the U.S. and Europe that mirrors the data about new cases.

The number of articles about European cases continued to decline, while coverage in the U.S. began to increase.

There is an inflection point on June 1st that underscores the growing concern around the surge in cases in America, especially in Texas and Florida.

At that moment the shift wasn’t appreciated because there were so many other things happening, including protests that prompted the mayor of New York City to impose a curfew.
